ชายหาดหลายแห่งในนครซิดนีย์ของออสเตรเลียปิดให้บริการในวันนี้ หลังพบนักท่องเที่ยวรายหนึ่งถูกฉลามกัดจนเสียชีวิตเป็นครั้งแรกในรอบเกือบ 60 ปี

เมื่อช่วงบ่ายวันพุธ (16 ก.พ.) เกิดเหตุฉลามตัวหนึ่งจู่โจมทำร้ายนักท่องเที่ยวที่กำลังว่ายน้ำอยู่ในชายหาดลิตเติล เบย์ โดยขณะนี้เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจยังไม่ได้เปิดเผยชื่อของเหยื่อผู้เคราะห์ร้าย พร้อมคาดการณ์ว่า ฉลามที่ก่อเหตุเป็นฉลามขาวขนาด 3 เมตร และเป็นครั้งแรกนับตั้งแต่ปี 2506 ที่มีเหตุฉลาดกัดคนเสียชีวิตในซิดนีย์

ภายหลังเกิดเหตุดังกล่าว เจ้าหน้าที่ได้เร่งนำสายกั้นฉลาม (Drum line) มาติดตั้งบริเวณจุดเกิดเหตุ พร้อมนำโดรนขึ้นบินเพื่อสังเกตการณ์ว่ายังมีฉลามวนเวียนอยู่ในบริเวณดังกล่าวหรือไม่

"เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นสร้างความตกใจให้กับชุมชนของเราอย่างมาก" นายดีแลน ปาร์กเกอร์ นายกเทศมนตรีของแรนด์วิค เคาซิล กล่าวกับสำนักข่าวรอยเตอร์ "แนวชายฝั่งถือเป็นสนามหลังบ้านของเรา การมีผู้เสียชีวิตอย่างน่าสลดใจจากสถานการณ์อันน่าสยดสยองเช่นนี้เป็นเรื่องที่น่าตระหนกอย่างยิ่ง"
รายงานระบุว่า อีกเพียงไม่กี่วันนับจากนี้ การแข่งขันว่ายน้ำเมอร์เรย์ โรส มาลาบาร์ เมจิก โอเชียน สวิม (Murray Rose Malabar Magic Ocean Swim) จะมีกำหนดเปิดฉากขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นงานการกุศลประจำปีที่บรรดานักว่ายน้ำหลายพันคนจะเข้าร่วมในการแข่งขันที่จะจัดขึ้นในหาดใกล้เคียง ส่งผลให้คณะผู้จัดต้องออกมาแถลงข่าวว่า พวกเขากำลังติดตามสถานการณ์อย่างใกล้ชิด เพื่อดูว่าอาจจะต้องเลื่อนการแข่งขันไปเป็นวันที่ 6 มี.ค.หรือไม่
